As long as Reapist started this let me ask a more broad question. Is there a cheaper alternative to cable? Like Netflix + Hulu Plus + Amazon or some such?

Yeah. That's kind of where I'm heading too. I am beginning to hate cable. I think we should get rid of cable and home phone.

I think my PS3 will do it, but also there is a cheap 1080 player on woot.com right now.

Our cable bill just jumped another $10/mo so I'm starting to think about looking at other options as well. We can afford the cable just fine but it's the principle. I hate getting charged more per month when I only want maybe 1/3 of the channels they shove on us

I went this route. I dropped cable, got DSL and Netflix. Huge annual savings for me.

It isn't good for sports. But as far as getting NetFlix + hulu + hbogo + whatever else it is totally worth it. Get a Roku box with it. I haven't had cable for months and don't miss it at all. I do have a good HD TV antenna though so I can get local broadcast sports games but I am a yankees fan living in SoCal... so I typically subscribe to MLB.TV every year anyhow
I do not miss cable at all. NetFlix + Hulu cover most shows. I download the other stuff like living earth series and etc
