I have come to the conclusion that core changes to games during beta are almost always failures -- and if sufficient things are changed, the game inevitably flops.

Thing is the systems as originally designed have been well thought out over a very long period of time and tend to work together.

Any changes to the system will have minimal testing, repercussions beyond the scope of the actual changes, and function merely as a last minute patch to a system.

It is almost like pulling on a thread -- each change makes more things come loose until you aren't left with a good product.

----

What prompted this was the changes to Tera they are doing for westernization... Introducing BoP, removing player stores, and removing mischief boxes. But I have seen these things in many games before -- most notably in vanguard where the released game was very different and less polished than it was back in early beta.

Mischief Boxes are incredibly stupid in the korean version. They have like a 90% failure rate.

Depending on how they are adding BoP though, that might be really stupid. If they seriously make every dungeon drop BoP, then eff that. I NEVER got drops from dungeons and I almost always had to buy them on the auction house.

Hardcore MMOer exaggeration never gets old.

Korean games usually need Westernization to succeed in those markets, and core changes are usually done because there's a core problem. They might not get it right the first time, but it's better than doing nothing.

Well what I said on their threads was they should have two types of servers -- one westernized and one NOT westernized -- after rolling with it one way then switching it midstream that is the only way they do not lose 15%ish of their pre-orders(30% of the people who fall to the opposite side).

I hate the BoP change that is the only thing that makes me angry

but for the AH change honestly what is the point of a player shop when there is an auction house? why would you want to go around visiting every other city sifting through the hundreds of little cute shops that have nothing but garbage on them for the 1 item you are really looking for?

i could care less about mischief boxes they sounded like a sham anyway

-----
Player Shop Examples:

1) Person #1 wants crafting ingredients. Person #2 is 15,000 short to buy a blue sword he wants off the AH. Person 2 sells crafting ingredients to person #1s buy pet and grabs the sword before someone else gets it.

2) Person #3 is an alchemist -- he decides to set a potion vendor outside a popular dungeon so people can buy potions and other consumables that they need without going all the way back to town (and makes a pretty good profit doing so).

3) Person #4 is trying to corner the market on blue level 30 swords. He buys every sword on the market and places his at 3x as much. Every time someone places a blue 30 sword on the market for less he buys it. Thankfully there are 3 such swords on vendors he missed in various places and his cartel is broken.

4) Guild #1 decides to choose the castonic home town as their base of operations. They have a cluster of vendors that they place there mostly for guild use. Person #5 discovers this enclave and makes a few transactions and contacts guild #1 to see if they have any openings.

----

As for mischief boxes, yes they had low percentage but the morphing ones could turn items that were completely worthless to you potentially into things that you need. In essence you get a non-popular mage green augment and take a 10% chance at turning it into one that you might need. Or you might try to get leather for your metal.

Tera. Very nice animations. Very shallow quests. Dragon Nest style combat. Brutal enchanting system. BoP forces you to use that enchanting system instead of buying pre-enchanted stuff.
