So much for serving the homeless.
The Bloomberg administration is now taking the term “food police†to new depths, blocking food donations to all government-run facilities that serve the city’s homeless.
In conjunction with a mayoral task force and the Health Department, the Department of Homeless Services recently started enforcing new nutritional rules for food served at city shelters. Since DHS can’t assess the nutritional content of donated food, shelters have to turn away good Samaritans.

Why can't they assess it? You'd think that would cost a lot less than paying for the same people to distribute/process the food in overhead and paying for the food (which would probably be overpriced seeing how the government has no idea how to prevent corrupt officials from being influenced by bid shilling done by who would be supplying it)

In TFA they even admit that NYC is providing enough food for the homeless:
"Fine, the city’s making enough nutritious food available to our homeless. (Court mandates require it.) But that’s no excuse for turning away charity that brings a tiny bit of joy into these lives."
So basically this article is complaining about a problem that is being manufactured by the article. Homeless people aren't starving due to the lack of donated, prepared food. I think its a dumb rule, but as long as the city steps up and fills in the gap, then they are doing ok.

In other news, the shelters have enough food to feed everyone who comes in, no one is starving at the shelter. The shelters are turning away your gigantic cans of crap that you didn't want to eat yourself but figured you'd dump at the shelter to make some room in your cabinet.
