Personally, I don't see the point in dumping thousands of dollars into a car stereo system. It's...a...CAR. Yes, I know people compete with their car systems, but those competitions are at places that you drive to and then PARK your car so it can be judged. The whole point of having a car is to DRIVE it places, not park it so someone can listen to your music. You certainly can't drive with all that power being blasted from those speakers - you'd get a noise nuisance ticket/summons from the local cops in a minute, if that.

But, hey, it's not my hobby, it's yours, so spend the money as you see fit. One of my hobbies? I'd love to build a M.A.M.E. cabinet and then a VP (Virtual Pinball) table, and I'm betting several here would wonder why in the world I'd spend a couple grand on those setups.

Much ignorance. I've ran as much as 800 watts in my car and have never been even asked to turn it down. Why? Because I don't listen to obnoxious bass tracks. I listen to real music. And mine have always been daily drivers. And yes, you do park it for a competition. God forbid it rusts away though. The truth is, there are many more peope out there with very high end systems and you will never know it because they do not ever compete. Even here in the PNW where competitions have all but died you have places like Car Toys making a living for many.

ABBA?

LOL Gald, I can't stand ABBA. But my best friend from Oklahoma loved them. I guess having 3 sisters helped.

*You* don't play the bass tracks, but so many others do, so the only place they can truly "open up" their systems is at a competition.

My point is that you spend several thousand dollars, but as soon as you start driving that vehicle around, all that fancy equipment falls victim to all sorts of problems that the equipment can't really overcome: road noise, traffic, and noise ordinances.

As I said, it's not my hobby, and I certainly can see why people enjoy spending that amount of money and time on their systems. That's why I even posted an example of one of my hobbies as a comparison of what people might see as a waste of money. I wasn't putting you down.

"road noise, traffic, and noise ordinances"

Road noise, easily combated with Dynamat for anyone willing to spend just a few bucks and do the work. While not being able to completely eliminate it, you can subdue it. Another method is a lot of power. That's why you see lower impedance drivers in car audio and much more powerful amps. This is actually something we are proud of defeating.

Traffic, I fail to see what that has to do with car audio. Maybe racing, but not music.

Noise Ordinances, this is very rare. People that do get them usually use them as bragging rights. I've seen store owners that have gotten them put them up on the wall. But it's still rare. And people do drive around and boom. Even in neighborhoods. Have you never heard this? Like at 1 AM?

I don't know much about car audio. I spent about $300 upgrading the speakers in my car after I bought it because the ones in there were blown out. I don't need much bass when I drive but I like to have my music sound good. It just becomes impossible for non-audiophiles to distinguish "good" from "omg super ultra GREAT!" at some point...

I agree with that. Plus, the upgrade you made was the single best upgrade you can make to any stock system. And yeah, it's takes a bit of critical listening to begin to appreciate the nuances that makes a good system. Too many people are caught up in what is being played, not how it sounds. And after a while you will begin to pick up little things in familiar recordings you've never heard before. Then you reach that point of enlightenment. Then you actually get in a vehicle to audition that is heads and shoulders above your own.
