Subject is question, question is subject.

So many of these apps require more permissions than any sane person should give them, and don't get me started on the built-in apps that you can't uninstall(without rooting, which I'm too lazy to bother with for my Galaxy Nexus because I've got it how I like it, and I don't feel like wiping it.)

Are these any better?

No.

But generally the reviews are better about having 500 people telling you not to download it for whatever reason.

I like it. Easy way to get apps for free everyday (there's a app they offer for free every day that changes)

Sigh.

F***ing codemonkeys thinking that an app that has no business accessing contacts, for example, needs to access them - and then people installing them.

I don't know anything about programming Android apps...

Why would it ever need the contacts?(edit: If it weren't an app designed around them)

Precisely.

That's the entire point.

And I'm not saying I could code them either. And I'm the first to admit that, but there are some of these things that have no business whatsoever accessing various things.

every app asks for permission to do everything, i've noticed.

If you collect tons of FAotD, as I do, you eventually end up with way too many apps to manage - even if you're diligent about looking at the permissions/feint/etc. requirements of each app at purchase time, I've found that the apps have updates on a fairly regular basis (maybe 10% of apps/week). You'd have to be very careful about looking at the changes for each of the updates after the purchase, because a post-purchase update sometimes adds new permissions. It gets to be a headache to manage.
Now I don't install most them on my phone, instead I install the apps on my son's tablet, since there is no phone/contacts/or any other personal information for them to mine from it. He's not even allowed to play with it with the wireless turned on, so none of the apps have access to the internet.
