I can tell that there is a WHOLE LOT of nuance that I'm missing. Just so many references and one liners that refer to things you're like "ummm what?"
It's definitely a tween flick for a good portion of the show. Lots of 'oh my family I love them so much', and 'I look pretty!', and 'He's so handsome, kiss me' stuff going on. The bad guys have a feel of the bully and his henchmen that roam the schoolyard after class is out to pick on the weaker kids. Lots of stuff to make you go "Why am I watching this again?"
And then there is the crazyness. Kids massacring other kids. All the 'death blows' are off screen...as they're portraying kids of 12,13,14years old...and there are some brutal deaths...blood sprays from slit throats and neck breaking...
All in all...NOT a chick flick. A REALLY twisted tween flick.
End of the day, it made me want to read the book to figure out all the stuff I know is going on but they don't explain in the movie...
Worth the price to see it in my mind. It was entertaining.

There's some delight in ale and wine,
And some in girls with ankles fine,
But my delight, yes, always mine,
Is to dance with Jak o' the Shadows.

If you thought that was twisted, go watch Battle Royale.
Its virtually the Hunger Games but way more f***ed up....and Japanese.
edit: And the books are really quite good. Enjoyed them myself, even if they were a bit melodramatic.

You mean Hunger Games is basically Battle Royale, but better in every way because it doesn't try to make sense of it.

From what I understand if they kept it the way they originally wanted to it would have been an R rated film.
They toned it down to make it Tween friendly but all of the reviewers I've heard on local radio say to let anyone under the age of 15 see it.
Edit: Engrish sucks with out coffee.

I can't figure out what, from the book, you'd need to cut to keep it from being rated R.

graphic death scenes most likely. That being said, just the content alone (kids being forced to kill each other for sport, essentially) could push it over that edge...but since the book's audience is teens/pre-teens I'm sure they did their best to make the movie one that parents would let them see.
I'll be seeing it this weekend and will decide at that point if my 10 year old can watch it just yet. She can handle most stuff pretty well but I always like to pre-screen just in case.

Isn't f'ed up and Japanese the same thing?
