Gave "nothing" in ounces at all. What was the weight of the ball?

Setting aside some "trick" of language:
if weight of the ball is "W":
two times its weight is 2*W or 2W
weight squared = W^2
"gave nothing in ounces at all" = 0 (is there some sort of trick here given what appears to be intentionally deceptive language used?)
2W + W^2 - 8 = 0 (subtract -8 from both sides or add 8)
2W + W^2 = 8
W=2 (ounces presumably)
