Don't some of those drug groups near the border have tanks and other intensely deadly crap? I could see it being useful in confrontations like that. If we could extend the picture to see what they're raiding it would help.

Only reason the drug cartels are as strong as they are is because of prohibition, without a drug war there wouldn't be a dire need to militarize our police force

Defense contractors make an absolute killing off the government more than anyone else. Up until a few years ago we even had their CEO as our VP
