The technology to turn natural gas into a clean, low-sulfur diesel fuel was developed in Nazi Germany. But the high costs of building GTL plants generally have kept the technique from being commercially viable.

The first large-scale plants were built in Qatar because the nation has an abundance of low-cost natural gas. The cost of Shell's the plant in Qatar escalated to about $18 billion, but the company hopes the knowledge gained there will help keep costs in check in Louisiana, one of the people said. The diesel produced in the state could be exported to Europe and Latin America.

Wow!! New technology has completly changed the US energy market. My company scrapped a log term plan to import natural gas.

Yes, and desperate too. Necessity is the mother of invention.

L.N.G. (liquefied natural gas)is a better option than turning it into diesel fuel from a cost and energy standpoint....but you can buy diesel anywhere, and there are very, very few places you can fill up on L.N.G.

It would seem reasonable that it could cost less to build a network of them than build one plant that costs 18 billion however.

U.P.S already has a small fleet of L.N.G. trucks on the road. Any current diesel engine can be quickly and fairly inexpensively switched over to L.N.G.

yeah bp has the only lng station around here and its 45 mins away at their regional headquarters, but they sell to the public.

the local paper ran a small article about it, when they ran the story a while ago they listed the price at $1.35 a gallon.

Doesn't the US have the world's largest reserves of natural gas? And your company is importing it?

Um, read what I said.

Just 3 years ago, a lot of oil companies were developing natural gas import facilities. Not any more.

The country with the largest natural gas reserves is Russia. China potentially has more natural gas than the US. It hasn't been developed, but it will.

Ok

*REREADINGNOW*

You said this tech has been around since 1940. You said the first plants to turn natural gas into diesel is going on in Qatar. You also used the word "Shell" in that sentence, but it's just floating around due to your bad copy and paste. Then you mentioned "one of the people", not really sure who those guys are...but apparently "one of the people" is hopeful knowledge gained in Qatar will keep costs down in Louisiana, who can then export to Europe and Latin America. I also went a-googling and see that the US is fifth on the list of natural gas reserves. That is surprising to me to learn that your company is scrapping a long term plan to import a resource abundant in the US, and in the same state likely as your refinery.

If it lowers the cost of diesel in the US, i am all for it. My truck is costing me an arm and a leg.

stupid idea, they could just equip homes and gas stations to use natural gas instead and partner with car company to use natural gas. why convert it and waste money and energy making it. save the steps.
