I think its basically someone they get along with and also balanced by who can draw the most support also.

Balancing the candidate IMO. Balance geographically is less important than balancing skill set and experience. Joe Biden was a good call because he is a working class liberal. He is given to speaking his mind and saying things he regrets. Obama comes off as well spoken, polished, and measured. Biden is frequently none of these. Also Biden had experience in so many areas where Obama was lacking.
But really it's about the candidate's first big decision. It's about what sort of people they intend to surround themselves with. That's why McCain lost any chance of getting my vote with Sarah Palin. When he chose Palin he revealed a lot about what sort of people he would take counsel from.
The differences between became more apparent as the race unfolded but their picks for VP really told us a lot.
