Somebody help me catch up.

Who is the older dude (Stannis maybe?) who is making his claim to the throne? He is calling Joffrey and the Stark family thieves. What gives? He's the one who sent 10 copies of his letter to the four corners of the kingdom. Is he the old king's eldest son and legitimate heir to the throne? If so, why does he hate the Starks?

Who is the red haired chick, the mentalist, the witch, the whatever? How was she able to drink the poison that killed the old dude? What is the deal with the sword ceremony, and Lightbringer, sword of kings, that got pulled from the pyre, but yet then left in the sand on the beach? WTF?

Who is the older boy being searched for? The one in the group going to the Wall in the North. Is he another son (bastard son maybe?) of the old fat king? I assume he is being targeted because he could show Joffrey to not have true legal rights to the throne? That true?

When the youngest Stark boy, the cripple, was being carried through the forest, they came to rest by a small pond/stream. His carrier placed him on the ground, and he crawled over and looked into the water. He, and the other young boy in the scene remarked about the hidden meaning of the comet. The other young boy called the Stark kid "boy". The Stark kid is technically Lord over that land. Who is that older kid and why can he call the Lord "Boy"?

There are 7 monarchs vying for power now. So it's natural to be confused:

Daenerys Targaryen
Joffrey Baratheon
Renly Baratheon
Stannis Baratheon
Rob Stark
Mance Rayder
Balon Greyjoy

Stannis is the older Baratheon you were referring to. He was King Robert's brother. His claim to the throne is that Joffrey (and the other younger boy, Tommen) is a bastard. Stannis was next in line of succession, so he is the true king of the Baratheon dynasty. Rob Stark just declared independence, thus, in the eyes of Stannis, Rob is a rebel. The younger brother of Stannis, Renly, is also seen as a rebel. And Joffrey is seen as a pretender.

The red haired chick is Melisandre. She is a priestess of the god of fire, "the Lord of Light". She was able to drink the poison because she is very powerful. That's all I'll say for now.

The older boy, Gendry, is one of King Robert's bastard sons. And yes, since Joffrey is a pretender to the throne, nobles could back Gendry with a legitimate claim to the throne.

The older kid is actually a girl. She's a wildling from north of the wall, the one who was captured in season one when a wildling band tried to steal Bran's horse. She calls him 'boy' because she doesn't know the customs of the south, and because Bran doesn't seem to care to correct her.
