been pretty bored lately, and I've been toying with the idea of leveling up a mage or something in WoW
is it enjoyable to level up through battlegrounds and can you obtain pvp gear as you level, like in warhammer?

you can but this is wow, it's a melee world, especially in pvp. if you're alone you'll get frustrated since every class has interrupt, silence, snare, stuns galore, etc etc

If you haven't purchased cataclysm you get a 10 day free trial and check it out right now. pretty handy. For pvp I'd go warrior if you're playing a lowbie.

I would advise playing a ice mage or a rogue in bgs those are pretty strong, where as warriors are having issues in pvp.

If you don't have any Bind on Account items, the low level brackets won't be much fun.

Low level brackets are always fun as a Rogue or Hunter.
Heirlooms or not.
