Trial and error. For example, here's one I also took looking up the path. Never done a vertical one before. Not too happy with how it turned out.

it is hmm odd, but what is it that concerns you about it?
i think it is the tall vs width for me when there are lines going sideways.
if that makes sense

try taking quadrant photos then photostitch them together?

Very nice
I took one myself on christmas eve.
This was a very chilly morning (note the frostsmoke on the fjord) in Ørsta, where I'm from
