From what I've seen of him the Libertarian party matches his profile a lot more closely than the Republican profile, and since the Republican party won't even let him debate it makes sense. Still, whenever the third party tickets attract bigger names there is an opportunity to be a spoiler for your nearest competitor, and that effect could be pronounced if he picks up a wider margin of the vote in his home state of New Mexico. So assuming it's an Obama/Romney election, how does this play out now?

Yes, but who? There are no more Naders on the left as far as I can tell. Any other major liberal name is too closely tied to the establishment to break away and run as an outsider.

Gary Johnson is the best candidate out there. The Republican party has made a terrible mistake by not embracing him.

Gary Johnson was the ex-governor of NM. He has a very close platform to Ron Paul. He is very anti-drug laws and has vetoed more bills than any other governor.

The ideal Republican ticket would have been Johnson/Paul. 2nd best option would be Paul/Johnson.
