If it were a primary, they'd at least represent some portion of the US. Since it's a caucus, they represent some portion of those people who are passionate enough about politics to take the day off and devote it toward getting their candidate nominated.

The system is screwy. Things were better when the guys in the smoky backrooms picked the candidates

The caucus basically is the smoky back room, except instead of a few dudes it's a few thousands who the candidates pretty much pay to come vote for them.

Iowa breaks down fairly evenly between R's, D's and I's. That said, their voting system leaves a great deal to be desired.
