1) Attach Mentos to a thread.
2) Put Mentos in neck of soda bottle.
3) Catch thread with cap and trim off extra thread.
4) Someone else opens bottle and Mentos falls into soda.
5) Hillarity ensues.

The coating on the Mentos does something to break the surface tension of the liquid, causing the carbonation to escape the same as if you vigorously shook the bottle.
