basically, it is about a boy that grew up in a remote village in lands controlled by evil elves. Turns out he, upon reaching 18, turns into a good elf. Along with some friends and his sister, he makes a run to the lands run by the good elves.
Story goes on..last book i read he went into battle..his sister died and his "wife" was about to die..and he turns into a dragon.
In the series, some of the elven mages can turn into dragons as well.
