I must have missed some drama, but what's the big deal about his tax returns? I've been hearing references for a couple of days, but no real conversation beyond him dropping the ball somehow.

The subject of tax returns came up at the CNN debate just a few days before the SC primary.
The CNN moderator was the one that brought the subject up and Romney was very dodgy about it, essentially saying that he wouldn't release them until april.
It was nothing damning but he danced around a bit and basically said he didn't want to give Obama any ammo earlier than he had to, i.e. presuming to win the nomination.

Before the debate Romney was winning SC polls by 10ish points. Election day he lost to Newt by 10+ points.
He came across as shifty and hiding something and even earned a few boos from the crowd.

Releasing it the same day ( Weds ) as Obama's speech is good and bad. They are taking a gamble.

Obama's people will have plenty of time to incorporate it into his speech about making the wealthy pay more during the SotU.

Mitt's people are hoping that it will get lost in the clutter of Obama's big speech day.
