Not quite sure what it was but I played this game far less than its predecessors in the franchise.

It was fun as a novelty, and I liked the fact that they finally made a path to victory that didn't involve expanding all over the world, but after a few rounds it got pretty stale.

I bought it dirt cheap on a Steam sale. It definitely did not have the just-one-more-turn quality of civ 2 or 4.

It's probably more you all getting old and Ptilk-like than anything else.
But actually sometimes better games have less lasting appeal. Sometimes what creates the "just one more click" is really shameless game design that appeals to the worst parts of humanity.
