that would be quite a ride. I sometimes get a bit of pucker factor when I stand by the edge of a tall building like the empire state building. Imagine looking out the window as that thing is going up...and up....and up.

I think I read that to be stable, the space elevator would have to be 22,000 miles (about 35405 km) long. Which means anything that's traveling on that would have to be obscenely fast, or else it'll be a long trip for whatever's on it (not to mention the base of it being a popular target for a terrorist attack).

22,000 miles would need a really big counterweight. Easier to make it longer instead (several times - I think about 60,000 is the accepted figure), and then you can also use the whippy end to launch deep space craft at dozens of miles per second.

And the idea for elevators is multiple cars. So nobody cares if it takes 24hours to reach the top.
