My ex-GF's cousin is a white hippy from Vermont. He and his also very white wife had difficulty having children. They finally managed to have one of their own very late in life and did not think they'd conceive again so they adopted. They wound up adopting a black child at something like 4 or 6 years old and raising him as their own.

Fast forward 5 or 6 years: dad is driving with the kid along an interstate on some trip or other with his black adopted son, now around age 12ish. They stop to eat at a rest stop and while they're eating someone calls the cops. As he and his adopted son walk out of the restaurant to get back in their car when they're stopped by police. Apparently someone had called the cops and the cops started asking questions. Fortunately the dad has the adoption papers with him and was able to show the police that everything was legit. It all took maybe 15 or 20 minutes. This was maybe 10 years ago.

The hippy dad's whole take on the situation and according to him, what he told the police as they apologized for delaying him and so forth: "I told the cops that it was no problem and that I was glad that at least someone was looking out for kids."


Clearly in the case of the story in the OP, the police acted a bit over the top. This should not be a surprise to anyone, given the generally much more martial and aggressive way LEOs have been acting, especially in recent years.

the article i read days ago said he was detained twice in the course of his walk...the last one being the swarm....he wasn't arrested and never taken to the station....and after giving a little lip to the supervising officer they let him go and they continued their walk home


i don't agree with the situation obviously and i dislike police in general as i think they are out of control.....i'm just mentioning inconsistencies in the article linked...

Well, not to get all technical, but any time officers "detain" you, it's essentially the same as being arrested. In fact it fits the literal definition.

It's a small point, but an important one. Citizens should have the right to carry on their lawful business without interference by state agents without probable cause and in the case of probable cause, an actual "arrest" should be either carried out as expeditiously as possible or clarifying the need for no "arrest" should be done as expeditiously as possible too.

Pretty much cops don't give a siht about that whole "right to carry on your lawful business" part of things and while I see this story as not a huge issue, I still see the cops acting inappropriately in the story on this matter and on others as well...
