In Los Angeles when I worked for Marubeni my bosses were both from Japan. I called pigeon's sky rats once and they both cracked up. "Why do you call doves sky rats?"
I don't think the Japanese separate doves and pigeons the way we do, so pigeons may have a different connotation in Japan.
Then again we are racist against birds. If we see doves we saw, "Aww, how pretty." If we see crows we say, "Ack, how shitty."
