Here is my raw image

I have imported this from a .pdf file and I made it a .psd file. I know how to add layers. My intention is to write questions on this background. For example,The text for one question: Is my beating heart more reliable than any moral principle?

My photoshop task will be to delete and fill some of the library check out dates so I can make the questions appear aesthetic.

IN an old photoshop program, I would just fill the areas I selected with a sample color and then I would be done. I cant figure this out, self teaching myself CS5. Does this make any sense. Thanks in advance for your help.

Restated I want to make some of the spaces with dates blank spaces , so I can fill it in with text.

Hmm I don't have CS5, just CS3 installed on my work laptop atm.

Just a couple quick thoughts: I think you have to promote the pic to full color RGB or CMYK to use most tools though?

Then you could copy+paste some background areas over the text, and/or use the clone brush.
That's what I would try at least.

Alright, I will give that a try. There use to be a bucket icon, which meant fill. I dont see that bucket icon at all. Thanks RH

It is in rgb format. Christ I used to be able to work this program. This summer i will have to take another class in it.

It says it is a smart object and needs to be rasterized.

You cannot use the painting tools or filters on layers that contain vector data (such as type layers, shape layers, vector masks, or Smart Objects) and generated data (such as fill layers). However, you can rasterize these layers to convert their contents into a flat, raster image.

Select the layers you want to rasterize, choose Layer > Rasterize, and then choose an option from the submenu:
Type Rasterizes the type on a type layer. It does not rasterize any other vector data on the layer.
Shape Rasterizes a shape layer.
Fill Content Rasterizes the fill of a shape layer, leaving the vector mask.
Vector Mask Rasterizes the vector mask on a layer, turning it into a layer mask.
Smart Object Converts a Smart Object into a raster layer.
Video Rasterizes the current video frame to an image layer.
3D (Extended only) Rasterizes the current view of 3D data into a flat raster layer.
Layer Rasterizes all vector data on the selected layers.
All Layers Rasterizes all layers that contain vector and generated data.
Note: To rasterize linked layers, select a linked layer, choose Layer > Select Linked Layers, and then rasterize the selected layers.
