The (older) religions of the world were just part of stuff that came down as information that was passed along from some "older" civilization. You know, kind of like a living plan to help people keep from making world-ending mistakes or something, but in a code (religion) because they knew people don't listen to other's mistakes.
Something along those lines anyway.
Or it could be aliens, of course.
