"What happened to society? I go into business, I don't make it, I go bankrupt. I've been on food stamps and welfare, did anybody help me out? No. No." - Craig T. Nelson

Moochers against Welfare -
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/17/opinion/krugman-moochers-against-welfare.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

"Contrary to what Mr. Santorum and Mr. Romney suggest, Mr. Obama has not radically expanded the safety net. Rather, the dire state of the economy has reduced incomes and made more people eligible for benefits, especially unemployment benefits. Basically, the safety net is the same, but more people are falling into it. But why do regions that rely on the safety net elect politicians who want to tear it down?"

and

"Cornell University’s Suzanne Mettler points out that many beneficiaries of government programs seem confused about their own place in the system. She tells us that 44 percent of Social Security recipients, 43 percent of those receiving unemployment benefits, and 40 percent of those on Medicare say that they “have not used a government program.”

"The truth, of course, is that the vast bulk of entitlement spending goes to the elderly, the disabled, and working families, so any significant cuts would have to fall largely on people who believe that they don’t use any government program."

What's the matter with Kansas?

"the conservative establishment has tricked Kansans, playing up the emotional touchstones of conservatism and perpetuating a sense of a vast liberal empire out to crush traditional values while barely ever discussing the Republicans' actual economic policies and what they mean to the working class. Thus the pro-life Kansas factory worker who listens to Rush Limbaugh will repeatedly vote for the party that is less likely to protect his safety, less likely to protect his job, and less likely to benefit him economically"

It baffles me that people can be such sheep.

Tax breaks for the rich.
Record corporate profits.
Cut unemployment benefits for their constituents
"Corporations are people."
National Health care is evil, as are all gubernmint programs wait, you mean my medicare and medicaid is going away?

How can anyone not in the 1% of the wealthiest people in America vote Republican?

Perhaps the are more concerned with social issues. There could be a myriad of reasons that aren't financially driven.

There are probably a lot of 1%ers that vote democrat. Does that mean they are voting against their own interest?

Your question is very short sighted.

This pretty much show what's fundamentally wrong with the Democratic way of thinking.

Im cool with a trust fund. Im not cool with working to destroy thw workng class and to protect the trust fund class. 35% vs 15% tax rate for instance.
