Hopefully this will be overturned at the Supreme Court. Otherwise, police will take this very narrow viewpoint decision and use it to search however they like.

This is old news. There was a thread about it here a week or two ago where all the myths were debunked.

All they said is when the police find a cellphone at a drug bust they're allowed to look up the number of the cellphone without getting a warrant first.

OH MY GOD THE POLICE ARE ALLOWED TO FIND OUT THE NUMBER OF A CELLPHONE FOUND AT A DRUG BUST WITHOUT GETTING A WARRANT FIRST? OUR FREEDOMS ARE GONE!!!!!!111

Anyone upset about this is making a fool of themselves and discrediting the civil liberties movement in general.

And again... there's probably zero a need for new law here.

What are the warrant rules for land lines? And for computers with files or encrypted files?

Well... there you go.

I am pretty sure the police are allowed to find out what your home phone line # is without a warrant if they arrest you for dealing drugs.

Politicians who use every minor technical advance as another bite at the apple, usually in the interest of making gigantic government gigantic-er, should all be drug out into the street, ridiculed, tarred, and feathered.

I made this point in the other thread about this but... If you're arrested at a drug bust the police can search your colon without a warrant.

Anyone getting butthurt over the fact that they can retrieve your phone number from a cell phone has their priorities entirely out-of-whack.

Well, I think the point was the phones weren't owned by the people being arrested, they were just at the scene of the bust.

But it's still a stupid thing to get angry about. Your phone # is not something you should have some inalienable right to hide from the police without a warrant, especially when they have probable cause to think it's connected to a crime.
