If not, then I would say it is a perception thing induced by instant global communications.

If so, then I would blame numerous factors, including: Instant global communications. Population swell in combination with unsustainable consumption demands which create fierce competition pressures. And a general but severe loss of being able to slow down and think about everything we do, or just not think so much about stress inducing pressures.

I don't think we (collectively) are especially smart, I think we just have so many people working on cutting edge stuff that it gives the impression that we are smart and able to rise to the challenge. But are we? It seems to me that we are not only not rising to challenges but that we are sliding into bitter fractures and bitter stalemates that can't end well.

Leaders claim to have answers but there is no consensus of agreement on their claims. There is no consensus of agreement on course of actions. There is massive distrust between the competing schools of thought all over the globe and every time I witness contentions between people I see nothing that leads me to believe that any given competing group is willing to acknowledge that anything whatsoever is wrong with their position or POV.

So, is humanity going down hill? Maybe, maybe not. But at the very least we are collectively going through a pretty bad phase, IMO.

What makes you think this is worse than the past?

You make a good case that things are not perfect today and it looks like they wont be perfect tomorrow.

At what time where there no fractures, stalemates or disagreements? Seems like history is full of these.

The world is actually growing really fast. This is creating growing pains for both established countries and the growing ones. It is also putting pressure on natural resources.

As time goes by life becomes more and more a game.

What most people do with their lives provides little or nothing to the survival of a person.

Those in power have everything to lose and nothing to gain from actual real productivity from the populace.

A large amount needs to go to waste by design.

This is what is fueling your perception.

No, the percentage stays the same. The total number goes up.
