I never have a problem with the actual dentist.

It's the hygienists that are awful - the ones that do the cleaning. The last time I went it had been a really long time (couple years) and I needed a cleaning badly. I got so sick of listening to this cow of a hygienist bitching at me I made her stop mid-cleaning to tell her, perhaps not as nicely as I should, to STFU - I don't care. If my teeth were perfect I wouldn't be having them cleaned. I'm convinced these people just hate their jobs.

If you spent all day doing your best to save someone's teeth from themselves you would probably act the same way.

A dentist's job is to keep your teeth healthy. Getting mad at them for telling you you're not doing a very good job just shows you're a pussy who can't take criticism.

P.S. If your dentist is bitching at you for doing a bad job taking care of your teeth that's a good sign. It means your dentist is actually interested in helping you, not just extracting as much cash from you as possible. The "non judgemental" ones who happily charge you thousands of dollars for the predictable results of your neglect are the ones you should watch out for.
