Subject: Teacher Tenure - The refuge of the inept?

I have mixed feelings about tenure as a teacher. I certainly appreciate that I have it, but I am pretty sure I would never really need its protection, since I am a halfway decent teacher. However, my biggest problem with it is that some teachers really kind of give up somewhere along the way and could use a big kick in the pants to motivate them (like possibly losing their job). This fear is somewhat lost by tenure.


I would much prefer to revise tenure to make it easier to get rid of bad teachers, and increase pay for teachers that do a kick ass job. I know some teachers worth their weight in gold and its insane that they get paid the same as the shlubs.

If you can think back to the good teachers you had, I think you would agree they didn't need tenure protection.
