Today, Facebook, in the name of "protecting your passwords and privacy," has made it a violation of its Statement of Rights and Responsibilities to "share or solicit a Facebook password."

"We don't think employers should be asking prospective employees to provide their passwords because we don't think it's right the thing to do," Erin Egan, Facebook's Chief Privacy Officer, explains. "But it also may cause problems for the employers that they are not anticipating. For example, if an employer sees on Facebook that someone is a member of a protected group (e.g. over a certain age, etc.) that employer may open themselves up to claims of discrimination if they don't hire that person."

Thats not enough. It needs to be made illegal. Why are so many companies evil?

I had one company in order to get the job make a list of all the people I knew. The thing is even if I didnt get the job the company would then have the list to call them and try to sell them stuff. That shouldnt be legal either.

It also shouldnt be legal to load spyware on your machine without your permission

That's a pretty good point I hadn't considered. Ageism maybe not so much...that's kind of hard to hide from an employer. But what if you log into their Facebook account and discover the applicant is gay? If you don't hire them at that point, you're seriously opening yourself up for a lawsuit in certain states if the applicant was otherwise qualified.

Too funny, I brought this same exact issue up in the other thread. It opens up a business to litigation - if they go on the site and find out the perspective employee is gay or in an inter-racial relationship or they find out the actual birthday and decide not to hire, then they have to be able to prove the reason is legal. Normally you dont ask such questions and avoid the issue, but if you're going to go dig and find out then you're knee deep in the issue.

Wow. I would never. A job isnt worth it if its asking for stuff like that. It has nothing to do with my skills or anything. My private life is MY private life. Outside of work its none of your business.
