The Energy Department is offering 100k to whoever can invent a Mobile Application. There is only one problem with this. There are already a bunch of them out there.
Perhaps it is like the affordable 50 buck light bulb. Just a reward to an Obama supporter pretending to be a prize.

The Department of Energy announced Thursday a $100,000 prize for software developers to come up with mobile applications to tell consumers how much energy they are using.
But there’s already an app for that.
A quick scan of the iTunes and Android markets shows nearly two dozen existing applications that accomplish the same purpose — helping users keep track of their energy consumption at home.

That is why is seems suspect. It is like when they have to open a job in government but already know exactly who is getting the job. Everything else is just for show.
