i don't think that's right... i don't really know a lot of the diabolical politics behind the VN/IGN relationship, but my general sense is that the Outpost (and VN) might have vanished a long time ago if it weren't for Mithan.

I doubt it. And even if it's true he was getting paid. Otherwise he would have just admitted it. So whether he regretted selling out and tried to help or not is not really relevant I don't think.

teh attempt is just to cash in.
Hits to ign are probably more valuable than hits here, plus overhead for one board's development/maintenance over two obviously cuts cost. but they would be morons to not try to keep us hitting F5.
