coming back to DAOC trying to find old characters

So I am returning to DAOC after several years. I used to play before my kids were born up to the release of WOW and since wow has lost its thrill and I have time on my hands I want to give DAOC another try. I miss it. Anyway, I had several characters spread over several realms when I left, I do not remember where they are. How do I find characters from archived servers to transfer them and continue to play?

1 of 2 things
use the herold and search by name or guild and jot it down, praying the herald actually works.
Or...do what most people have to do (including yours truly)
go through each server and realm

When I did it I used a spreadsheet: server names down one side and the realms across the top. It was brutal. How brutal you ask?  Yeah, that brutal.
