Any good collection quests like the old Shadow Armor?

For some reason I really enjoy collecting semi-rare items. Like dark shards and small shards. Unfortunately the reward of Shadow Armor is useless since pretty much any common drop armor is better than Shadow Armor now days. I know there is a modern version with prismatic armor but even that is lame. So any fun collection quests I can do? I love that feeling when you loot a small shard

The closest thing to the shard/shadow poop collection days is the alternate currency mechanic. It's not nearly as enjoyable, but it is quite rewarding--and all but necessary for a wide variety of items.
It can be fun grinding out alternate currency to get a few key items (empyrean crystals, soulbound, etc), but I found myself quite burnt out after the second character.
