Kind of contradicting my last post, but heading down to the big city for New Year's Eve and hate to see the prices of beer down there. Does Amtrak allow alcoholic beverages? Assuming they'll check my luggage for bombs. I haven't been on Amtrak in many moons.

Not here it isnt, its actually encouraged on NYE. They have mass transit sponsored by a beer company in Minneapolis on NYE so people dont drive.

You can drink on all of the Metra (commuter rail) in and out of Chicago, I see it every day.
Now SOMETIMES (Taste of Chicago, 4th of July, other big events) they will ban alcohol, but as a general rule of thumb they allow it.
They sell these big 20oz beers right outside the departure areas in Union Station).
Edit: Oh you were asking about Amtrak - I don't know, I did find this on their site though:
"More Amtrak Travel Information
Alcohol
Passengers are not permitted to consume their private stock of alcoholic beverages in a public area. Only sleeping car accomodations for which a passenger has a valid ticket are considered non-public areas. "

Where I live you are not allowed to drink on public transportation, bringing alcohol (un-opened) with you is not a problem however.

Well, I don't see anything on Amtrak's website, so, I'm assuming its okay. They do say 'intoxicated' individuals so no drinky-drinky.
- Whose conduct is objectionable (such as, but not limited to, being under the influence of alcohol or narcotics)
- Whose personal hygiene makes them offensive
