I would only give my social if I was in the final runnings, when they do the background check etc... not during the first step.

I've worked so many places and the boss does the same thing with the applications they get...They put it on a shelf, just laying out there. Every time i'm freaking out...anyone can read this person's social security number...and other information...including life skills and places of schooling. Omg...YOU HAVE A FILE CABINET PUT IT INSIDE UNTIL YOU WANT A NEW EMPLOYEE, OR JUST MAYBE DON"T ACCEPT UNLESS YOUR ACCEPTING!! 
I don't know how many applications get blew onto the floor from a breeze from a window stepped on muddied up and threw away, not even shredded, just plunk, into the trash. OMG! THAT"S SUCH PERSONAL INFORMATION!
