A deeper investigation reveals that this was a pathetic attempt by progressive edu-crats at something they have labeled "cross-curricular". That is, they took something the kids were supposed to be studying in social studies (slavery, etc.) and insert it into their math problems.

I think they could have made the questions more culturally relevent.
"If the descendent of a freed slave gets 8 years in prison for raping white women then how many white women did he rape to receive a 56 year sentence?"
"Nike made 100 pairs of limited edition Air Jordans. They were equally distributed to malls across the country. Each mall has five pairs of shoes for sale. How many malls will be destroyed by the descendents of freed slaves upset that they didn't get a chance to buy sneakers?"
