I cancelled my cable TV and I am trying to watch TV for free. There is constant static and digital swirl/distortion. I bought a few different HDTV antennas but each one is worse than the other. I can get 1 channel and even that is not great. Is this another failure to the American people. This whole change from analog to digital seems like a big mistake to me.
I just bought another antenna, I could have had about 3 months of cable with my antenna costs so far.

I just download the stuff I want to watch and send it to the machine hooked to my TV.

Only exception is for sports...which I watch live online.

you have an HDTV or an HDTV-ready set box, right?

if not (read: analog tv) you'll need a convertor, which cost about 20 bucks

with HD, there is no static, it's either all on or all off

Yes, I have a convertor, maybe I should just buy a digital ready TV.

It is not static sort of like a large pixal swish

check the second link i put up (location) the key with HDTV OTA recpetion is that you pretty much have to be in line of sight to the towers you want to receive the most.
Thus, you need to have enough height as well as appropriate orientation to the source signal.

I have a lot of brick buildings around me, ABC tower is 9 miles away....I can't put an antenna on the roof.

WABC-TV (ABC)
Distance: 9 miles @289°
Channel 7(VHF)
Virtual channel: 7

The Suggested Setup: Pulling the Most TV Networks

Winegard HD7698P (Read HD7698P reviews)
Preamp: Required
Rotator: Required

the beauty of an HD signal is that it will bounce off buildings, so you may get lucky with the right setup

and you will get a far better picture from OTA HD signals than you would from a cable or satellite provider
