Are they good for tanking at all? is it worth it going down that road?

I have a 46 bh but he is a merc/dps build.

At 46 I have 11.3k hp 25.7% damage reduction with 33% crit rate. This is all aim and endurance gear mostly.

I have enough dps and big enough health pool to grab and hold aggro when the main tank has fallen before.

I am also well geared all my gear is either purples, upgradeable's and blues that are all with in 5 levels. I buy new gear now every 2 or 3 levels, especially with crafted purples selling cheap.

now I cant speak of powertech bh's and my vanguard is only lvl 13.

i've been told that they are the best tanks, and i do know that my powertech (almost 30 now) is pretty tough. i kinda like my assassin though, its just somewhat frustrating to try to keep the short buff on all the time.

This is cheap of me, but "Dark Ward" the buff you speak of does not trigger the global cooldown at all. So you can trigger it at anytime and not interrupt the rest of your rotation. I made a toggle button on my macro keyboards that recasts it automatically for me.

For the OP - Yes both the Bounty Hunter and the Trooper have an advanced class that can tank very well.

Legacy kicks in around lvl 30 (give or take). Your class quest triggers it at chapter 3.
