It's all in the upgrades, I use the barbarian upgrade for the soldiers because they can kill flyers with the throwing axe. The other key upgrade is for the cannon or bomb or whatever they call it, the homing missile is pretty badass. The sniper upgrade for the archers is also cool as it can get the one hit headshot on the bosses.

completed the campaign with 3 stars on each map.. completed some of the heroic and iron challenges but kind of grew tired of it

Beat it with 3 stars every level. The iron and heroic levels are tough as hell, no where near beating those.
AWESOME TD game by the way. Another good one (with the same voice actor) is Hands of War. Well designed, and i like the balance of factions that comes with the game. Also, you can play as 3 different 'heroes' with 3 separate save slots. have all 3 over level 25 now.
