Free is better. I cant recall what I used before but I assume the software that came with this thing sucks because they always do.

Windows movie maker but I have trouble with codecs and gave up with it. I use something that comes with my dazzle device.

Expression Encore is pretty nice, you might be able to get that for free using the webinstaller from microsoft
has good screen capturing too, WAY better than fraps by a long shot

I think Sony still makes Vegas, that's like one of the best non-commercial editing apps you can get
