I'm headed to Japan in a week, and they have the PS Vita there cheaper than it is in the US. what differences and complications can I expect buying it from Japan instead of the US?

yea, prices on it are dropping like a rock over there. No one will buy it. the 3G version there is cheaper than the non 3G version here.

Power, Game Regions, NTSC difference, and I'm sure theres others.
If you just want to play JP import games, go for it
edit - Im sure they also found a way to lock out the JP Vita from the US PS store.

Vita is a handheld.
No problem with the power either.
No problem with putting in USA games into the thing.
Only problem is with DLC.
