The NFL will kick off its season on Wednesday, Sept. 5 instead of the traditional Thursday night start to avoid a conflict with a scheduled speech by President Barack Obama on Sept. 6 at the Democratic National Convention.

Commissioner Roger Goodell made the announcement Tuesday. The game, to be hosted by the Super Bowl-champion New York Giants at MetLife Stadium, will begin at 8:30 p.m. ET.

The Giants' opponent for the opener hasn't been determined yet. The 2012 NFL schedule will be revealed in the coming months.

According to the league, it hasn't played a game on a Wednesday since Sept. 22, 1948, when the Rams faced the Lions.

The NFL regular season has started on a Thursday since 2002.

This year's change was announced by the league on Tuesday.

I'm happy that I get a game back this year for my season ticket even if it is only a pre-season game. Can't wait until next year when we get back a regular season game.

Seriously, it's not like the prez won't be covered on every other station, and for those people who actually want to watch the game and the speech, there will be 100's of replays/summaries of the speech the next day on the web. For that matter, why do we need the same damn thing broadcast on every channel at the same time? With the hundreds of useless channels on tv, can't they just designate C-span to cover the speech and let all the networks continue their usual schedules?

Don't preempt every show for a speech unless it's to say the missiles are coming, to give us time to pray/get to a bunker/screw anything that moves (or whatever else might be on your "last 10 minutes of life bucket list".
