Never understood why dictators even bother with elections.
Because the power of doubt keeps people enslaved. If the people clearly knew beyond a doubt that they were being kept in some fashion, that would instantly empower them to be rightful opposition to the state. Those that do know that they are being swindled are readily labeled as enemies or crackpots by statists and useful sycophants.
