you'll have to get a new drive with the o/s and slave the bad drive.. but you can search for files and recover.

Best one I used was SpinRite. But it costs money. Obviously I didn't pay for it.

Depends entirely on how dead it is.

Does it spin up? Does it click loudly? Softly?

If it won't spin up, you are f***ed. No software can help you with that. Companies that do that kind of recovery are $$$$.

If it still spins up and makes no mechanical clicking sounds or anything, have you tried simply slaving it?

I would test the drive with a hard drive testing program. I personally recommend Hitachi DFT. Can easily get it online free.

DFT will tell you whats up, and if its just a few bad sectors can regenerate them.

edit: If it spins up: http://www.active-undelete.com/download.htm

Thats a great program and you can download a demo for free which will show you if you can get your files back.
