What's all this about brackets...?

Every year I hear about people filling out their brackets and I never thought to ask why they do it. I don't watch amateur sports so I don't know.
Do you win money if your bracket is correct or something, is it a form of gambling? If there's no money involved then why do you care?

I think it has something to do with some sort of disease that happens every year, like a seasonal flu. Something that causes "madness"
My suggestion is to avoid meats and drink plenty of fluids

That seems like a low-chance way to bet. What is the bet exactly, that you'll pick the final 4 correct? Why not just bet individual games? Seems like an easier way to win money.
Every year Americans get obsessed with these brackets and I never understood why. You never hear about people picking brackets for any other type of tournaments...

No other tournaments have the same history of underdog stories, randomness, and upsets.
