to rip directly from disc to an external drive
one that pulls the tags from gracenote or amazon or whatever and go to the external drive as the final destination

not using iTunes - don't like how they do it

Media Monkey is my favorite. They have a pay version but the free will do this.

Media Monkey has a small but some registry footprint. You can install it as a portable app if you want zero footprint. I hadn't thought of a portable install that but it's not a bad idea.
